Valeo at the heart of the bus and coach electrification revolution

Paris, October 20, 2017 – At the 24th Busworld Europe exhibition in Kortrijk, Belgium, Valeo is presenting its latest innovations for buses and coaches. The technologies on display at its stand are designed to keep the cabin interior at an optimal temperature for passengers, regardless of the weather, the nature and duration of the journey and the powertrain type. The lineup of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions is specifically designed for electric and hybrid buses and coaches and meets today’s climate challenges by offering a smarter, more efficient way of consuming energy. The following technologies are being showcased:

-The REVO-E Global range of electric roof units: a comprehensive solution for electric buses and coaches that optimizes HVAC performance in the cabin while minimizing the impact on vehicle range.

-The Battery Cooler: a battery cooling system that maintains the temperature of the battery cells in hybrid and electric vehicles for optimal longevity and performance.*

-The Heat Pump: a reversible, environmentally friendly heat pump that heats, cools and demists electric vehicle cabins without using any chemical refrigerants.

Valeo's innovations also include advances in minibus equipment and heating technologies.

-The Valeo Minisphere rooftop air conditioner: the lightest air conditioning solution on the market, adapted to all minibuses.

  • The Valeo Thermo plus and Thermo E+ heating units: offering high performance, durability and cost effectiveness.

Valeo Thermal Commercial Vehicles: a new name for the world leader in bus air conditioning

Paris, 18 August 2017 – Spheros, a Valeo company since March 2016, will now operate under the name Valeo Thermal Commercial Vehicles, completing its integration into the Valeo Group. A technological leader in bus air conditioning and heating systems, the company will also adopt a new visual identity.

With this announcement, Valeo is informing Spheros customers and business partners that the subsidiary will be changing its name. Acquired by Valeo in 2016, Spheros now operates worldwide under the name Valeo Thermal Commercial Vehicles. Furthermore, the company will be appearing for the first time under the Valeo banner at the October 2017 Busworld Europe exhibition in Kortrijk, Belgium, where it will also unveil its new corporate identity based on the Group’s strategic principles.

“As we integrate into the Valeo Group, we will maintain our focus on reliable bus products, future technologies and daily market issues,” said Mark Sondermann, the recently appointed Director of Valeo Thermal Commercial Vehicles. “Our new entity intends to make a significant contribution to Valeo’s strategy, whose two key focuses are CO2 emissions, notably through vehicle electrification, and expansion into markets with high growth potential.

By combining the technical know-how of Valeo Thermal Commercial Vehicles and the expertise of the Valeo Thermal Systems team, the company is expected to further increase its market leadership in the development of bus heating and air conditioning systems, roof hatches and smart electronic control units.

Valeo Minisphere as a standard retrofit on Mercedes minibuses

According to Directive 2006/40/EG, since 01.01.2017 only air conditioning Systems using coolant 1234yf may be installed in minibuses with up to eight seats plus driver. This applies to both original equipment and retrofits. The use of air conditioning units with coolant R134a is still permissible for all buses with more than 8 + 1 seats. The Valeo Minisphere rooftop unit is now available as a standard retrofit with the new coolant on Mercedes minibuses.

The Minisphere was first installed earlier this year as a 1234yf version on a MB-Sprinter Mobility 23 at OMNIplus Busworld Home Dortmund. Further vehicles have since been retrofitted.

With a remarkably low weight of 38 kg in the 10 kW version the Minisphere is 22 kg lighter than its predecessor, the CC 145, and thus the most lightweight air conditioning solution for minibuses. Its low weight enables it to be quickly and easily installed, particularly as a retrofit. Its flat aerodynamic style harmonises optimally with the vehicle design. In additon, the unit comes with an optional heater and/or fresh air function (30% fresh air).

The Minisphere is controlled and operated with the specially developed SC 400 control element and features both an automatic and manual mode. The temperature can be set between 17° C and 24°C in stages of 0.5°C. Valeo Thermal Bus supplies the complete unit with SC 400 control unit and TM16 compressor, including the motor bracket.

OMNIplus Busworld Home Dortmund has been purchasing Valeo product for many years now. For example, the Citysphere S air conditioning unit for the driver’s section has also been installed multiple times as a retrofit for city buses.

Small Minisphere comes out big at the FIAA

With growing numbers of visitors, this year’s FIAA took place in Madrid from 23 to 26 May. The organizers of this international trade fair for buses and urban buses reported 20% more exhibitors and visitors. In the focus of our trade fair booth was the Minisphere, because in Spain many local bus manufacturers serve the market with small buses based on MB Sprinter or IVECO Daily. Here, this system can score especially with its weight and many other advantages.
